Ski Steamboat Springs
Located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado has long been thought of as a destination for ski enthusiasts. The history of American skiing was literally being written in the state and Colorado remains a favorite of legendary skiers to this day. Once an obscure settlement, Steamboat Springs, Colorado, has become one of the best ski towns in the country.
Steamboat Springs if often called Ski Town USA because of its abundance of ski slopes and winter activities. The region has spawned more ski champions and Olympic medalists than anywhere else in the United States. Steamboat Springs’ first ski jump was built as early as 1913, by Norwegian businessman Carl Howelsen. The area is named in his honor Howelsen Hill Ski Area and is to date the oldest and largest ski complex in continuous use within the entire North American continent. Carl Howelsen also created the annual Winter Carnival, which to date remains the highlight of a visit to Steamboat Springs. The Carnival is primarily a competitive amateur ski jumping event and brings together some of the world’s top talent. Other events at the carnival include dog sled and carriage races.
Another popular ski site is Mount Werner which is located a little outside of town in the Root National Forest. The large ski area of nearly 3,000 acres is sponsored by Steamboat Ski Resort. Mount Werner offers about 164 trails from beginner to advanced levels that still leave room for the longest ski tube in the United States. The area also receives the most snowfall in Colorado, and as a result is ski-friendly for much of the year. The best time to ski in Steamboat Springs is late summer and early spring. The climate and slopes are most favorable at these times and hundreds flock to the town to catch the skiing scene. Safety levels are also lowest in peak seasons and accidents are not uncommon, so visitors are advised to travel in groups.
