Kansas Golf Vacations – Wolf Creek Golf Course

I played at Wolf Creek Golf Links, Inc. , located in Olathe, KS a couple of weeks ago at a Kansas City Cup match and I must say it was a very nice golf course. We won the match, which might have made it that much better, but I thought posting my review of the course while it was still fresh in my mind.

If you don’t know about Wolf Creek or haven’t heard of it, you’re in for a treat. First of all, it is a men only club. This literally means no woman allowed. The bartenders are men. Rickshaw girls are men. Everyone there is a man. It’s actually an odd experience, but I think some people are looking for that kind of environment.

Being men only makes it a very exclusive golf course, which is 100% private (except for events like the KC Cup, where we had to play due to format). I don’t know the exact dues required to become a member, but based on the course format, I’m sure it’s quite substantial.

The course itself, although it is located in Olathe, Kansas is very isolated. It is situated in the far south of Olathe, in the midst of a range of fields. The seclusion offers great tranquility and a great golfing experience.

Driving to the course is not quite as great an experience as you would be at some of the other exclusive venues. The club is unpretentious, neither too extravagant nor shoddy. There is a bar, locker room, and dining room, among others (after the tour, I glanced at the poker table at the back of a room full of gentlemen playing what I’m going to assume was a friendly game). The course is gated, but again, doesn’t blow the air of something as exclusive as it is rumored to be.

I think the reason for the modest club and facilities is twofold. First, with only men, how extravagant must it be? Isn’t it cool to just say you belong to an all-male golf club? Secondly, by the way the course looks – it was great – it looks like all their money goes into maintaining and upgrading the golf course itself.

Starting off, the range was very nice. It’s a lawn, a bunch of balls bagged into the range balls at each station (about 20 stations), and they have a bunch of bags full of tees for you to enjoy. Out of range, you’ll hit several different flagpoles in several different arenas. He was in great shape.

If you ever played here, putting a pair of putts on the green is a must. The greens are firm, fast, and cut beautifully. It rolls right, but get used to it because it’s faster than the average green. For me, honestly, on the day we played, I thought the greens were marginally fast. But I think it was because we played so early in the season. In the middle of summer, I could see them at lightning speed.

As for the track itself, there is a lot of ripple and a lot of holes with little to no ripple. There are two triangles in particular, one on the front nine, one on the back, that I particularly like. The first was slightly downhill with water guarding the front and right sides of the green (everyone missed the long and left-go figure). The other third level is at the height of the tee box before dropping at least 100 feet to the green. It’s a great looking shot.

Overall I would rate the course a 9 out of 10. The course was great from tee to green and I had a great time. The only thing keeping it from being a 10 was that wow factor (although one of my opponents was a former Major League All-Star – that was great – and he was a decent golfer). It was a very interesting course, but when I finished I didn’t feel any different as a golfer – that’s what took my 10.
