Top 10 skiing and snowboarding around Neuschwanstein Castle – Schwangen – Bavaria

How about combining a skiing or snowboarding holiday with a visit to the most famous castle in Europe: Neuschwanstein Castle? You can stay in one of the luxury self-catering boutique apartments or in a country hotel and enjoy the view of the king’s castles which look amazing especially when lit up at night.

Here is a list of the best places to ski in and around Schwangau.

1. Mount Tegelberg (1720m) and Wintersport Arena / Schwangau Germany

Right in Schwangau is the King’s Castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau village, the Wintersport Tegelberg square with its cable car, 4 regular lifts and flood light at night. You’ll enjoy 7.3 kilometers of downhill slopes here as well as a separate one for tobogganing. Great for beginner and intermediate skiers, this place has a ski school and ski/snowboard rental facilities. Ice machines offer an ice guarantee.

A highlight is the 2-kilometer Neuschwanstein Cross Country ski run, which is lit up at night … and, of course, skiing with “Cinderella’s Castle” in view.

2. Buchenberg (1140 m) ski area / Buching Germany

Just a 5-minute drive from Schangau, you will find a double lift that will take you to the top of the Buchenberg. Two more regular lifts provide versatility.

A special feature is the 2.5 km toboggan run right from the top of the mountain. The hut on top of the mountain offers stunning views of the lakes and valley. This area is great for beginners and families as well as for ski lovers.

3. Alpspitz (1575m) Skating Rink / Nisselwang, Germany

Alpspitz Ski Arena is just a 20-minute drive from Schwangau. It benefits from the longest daily floodlit 2km toboggan in the area and has 1 chairlift, 4 chairlifts, 2 chairlifts, 3 regular lifts and 2 baby lifts. This diverse venue offers skiing fun for advanced skiers as well as beginners and families. There is a ski school, ski/snowboard/snowboard rental facilities, ski areas as well as several excellent après-ski mountain huts.

A highlight here is the O’Neill Alpspitzpark, a state-of-the-art Freerider Snowboard park with Floodlight every night from 6-9pm.

4. Breitenberg Mountain (1877 m) Ski Center / Pfronten, Germany

Just a 15-minute drive from Schwangau, you will reach the Breitenberg Ski Center with its own cable car, 4 open benches and 5 regular lifts as well as 4 children’s lifts. Near Steinbach is the Snowboard Theme Park and Ski School as well as a couple of other floodlit ski areas.

A special feature for the first time in the winter of 2009/2010 was the 6.5 km toboggan run right from the top of the mountain.

5. Hahnenkamm Ski Resort (1900m) / Reutte Austria

Hahnenkamm Ski Resort is only a 25-minute drive from Schwangau to Austria with cable cars, 2 chairlifts and 5 other standard lifts. It has one of the best ski schools for adults and children. Skis and snowboards can be rented there.

6. -9. Füssener Jöchle (1821 m) and Ski Arena Tannheimer Tal / Austria

There are 4 ski resorts in Tannheimer Tal in Austria, not more than 30 minutes from Schwangau, one of them is Füssener Jöchle in Grän. It contains a cable car, 6 seats, and 3 regular elevators. The length of the piste from the top is 3.5 kilometers.

Other ski resorts here are Neunerköpfle / Tannheim, Schattwald and Nesselwängle.

10. Jungholz Ski Center / Jungholz Germany

About 40 minutes from Neuschwanstein Castle is a very family-friendly ski center with two special four-seaters and one training lift. For adults, there are 4 standard lifts. Ice machines offer an ice guarantee.
